Education and Advanced Training
Dr. Carner’s academic background blends science with critical thinking — a mix that laid the foundation for his career. He completed his undergraduate studies at Centre College in Danville, Kentucky, graduating with a double major in history and biology. This broad foundation gave him both technical knowledge and the communication skills that have become central to his practice today.
He went on to earn his Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) degree from the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry, graduating in 2000. He then stayed on for a three-year advanced residency in periodontology and implant dentistry, gaining deep clinical expertise in the diagnosis and surgical treatment of gum and bone conditions, as well as the placement of dental implants.
During this time, he also contributed to interdisciplinary research in maternal health, exploring the connection between periodontal disease and complications in pregnancy — a project that broadened his understanding of how oral health ties into overall systemic wellness.
Board Certification and Professional Memberships
Dr. Carner holds board certification from the American Board of Periodontology — a distinction achieved by less than one-third of periodontists nationwide. This credential reflects his commitment to maintaining the highest standards in the specialty.
