A soft tissue graft is usually performed if someone has begun to lose gum tissue around a tooth and has part of the root of the tooth exposed. The graft is a small piece of tissue that is usually removed from the roof of the mouth and is placed over the root to attempt to prevent the gum loss from getting worse, which could ultimately result in tooth loss. It is a very minor procedure and the area heals quickly. When performing a graft, the earlier an area is treated, the better the chances are that the root can be covered.
